Case Study 4: The Dark Sides of Globalization
The phrase "globalization has its winners and losers” has become a ubiquitous in this global age. While there are people rejoicing in cultural diversity in cosmopolitan cities and
international exposure, there are those whose lives are adversely affected beyond imagination. In this course, we will look at a range of 'dark sides of globalization', from farmers who cannot compete with foreign exports being ‘dumped’ into their home markets, to the increase of
cyber-related harms and crimes: cyberbullying, internet addiction, identity theft, but to name a few.
The rise of sex tourism in countries such as Thailand and Ghana, often involving minors, is also a horrible reality inextricably linked to globalization. The question is: does this mean globalization is a necessary evil?
